Dr Gemma Catney is a leading Population and Social Geographer at Queen's University Belfast.

Gemma is leading a major (£1m) Economic and Social Research Council funded project 'Geographies of Ethnic Diversity and Inequalities (GEDI)' (2023-2026).

The project explores in detail the ways in which our society is changing, through an innovative integration of previously disparate research strands on ethnic diversity, residential segregation, ethnic inequalities, and internal migration

In 2019, Gemma was the recipient of the prestigious Royal Geographical Society (with the Institute of British Geographers) Gill Memorial Award, for outstanding early career research.

Gemma has published numerous journal articles and book chapters on the geographies of ethnic diversity and inequalities, and has attracted research funding from the Economic and Social Research Council, Leverhulme Trust, Nuffield Foundation, British Academy, Joseph Rowntree Foundation, and the Royal Geographical Society with the Institute of British Geographers.

Her research has been used as evidence in government reviews, cited in numerous policy reports, and featured in the national and local press.
