The Best Places to Catch a Film in Belfast

Broadcast Production student Katie lists her favourite cinema spots in Belfast!

Catching a movie in the heart of Belfast is one of my favourite activities to do!! Due to my huge passion for horror/thriller films and the uni course I have ventured down (Broadcast Production), this pastime is certainly a regular occurrence for me! As well as one I highly recommend.

Belfast has an amazing range of cinemas to visit including the QFT (Queens Film Theatre), Strand Arts Centre, Cineworld, Odeon and The Avenue. With each encompassing its own uniqueness.

Queen's Film Theatre

I couldn’t recommend the QFT enough! Located metres away from the Lanyon building and Queen’s campus, it offers a broad range of movie choices to suit a wide audience. Besides mainstream films, the QFT is known for showcasing independent and foreign language cinema as well as displaying older movies. Loved but not forgotten!

You can also accompany your movies with a vast choice of cocktails, soft drinks and much more! In fact, they’re one of the only cinemas that serves you alcohol that you can take into the screen. This may persuade you! An extra bonus is due to it being part of Queen's, students get cheaper tickets (priced at £5)! So why wouldn’t you treat yourself?

As well as this, the QFT holds special events such as Stage on Screen and Visions of Europe.

Stage On Screen

If you love both theatre and the movies, this one is definitely for you! This special event allows you to witness a production (most of which has been filmed in a London theatre) on the big screen in the QFT! Again, the QFT offer a variety of screenings, so there will definitely be one for everyone. Something a bit different, and one I'd highly recommend!

Visions of Europe

This event is a celebration of the best in European cinema, including exclusive previews, new releases, and newly restored classics, as well as films you might have unfortunately missed! Another great opportunity and one not to miss.

The QFT is located just across the road from the main campus

So as you can see, if you are looking for something a bit quirky and different, the QFT is the place to be. Only metres away from campus, perfect for treating yourself after a long day of studying!

Strand Arts Centre

The Strand Arts Centre is located a bit further out in East Belfast but still offers just as much. This space offers a diversification of arts events and activities. This cinema contains a great deal of character, and with the help of the local community, this space has been transformed into an astonishing art centre with a great deal of charm!

Cineworld, Odeon and the Avenue

All three of which are positioned in the heart of Belfast, each bearing their own individuality, it’s hard to say no to them! My go-to is definitely the Odeon. The choice selection is vast and the offer of the unmissable deal ‘myODEON saver’, tickets are only £5! It’s a bargain if you ask me.

If you’re looking for something a bit more ‘boujee’ I would highly recommend The Avenue. Although slightly more expensive, the cinema offers a great deal of comfort! Literally! With luscious, comfy seats and food and drink served directly to your seat, what more could you want?

Enjoy pizza, burgers and cocktails at The Avenue

As you can see, Belfast offers a variety of choice when it comes to the cinema. I would highly recommend trying all the places I've listed above. Encompassing their own uniqueness and benefits, they’re certainly not ones to miss!
