Teaching Assistants 2024-2025
Applications are invited from suitably qualified persons to enable the School of Social Sciences, Education, and Social Work to compile a register of Teaching Assistants for the academic year 2024-2025. Successful applicants will fully contribute to the delivery of teaching and conduct of assessments to agreed standards.
A list of subject areas for which applications are invited is set out below:
- Criminology
- Social Policy
- Sociology
- Qualitative and Quantitative Research Methods
The level of support provided will be agreed in writing between the school and the individual and will be determined by the teaching requirements of each subject area in 2024-25. Training will be provided by the School and University in September 2024 (date TBC) and attendance at this training is mandatory for all new successful applicants.
Those who have previously acted as Teaching Assistants in the School of Social Sciences Education and Social Work must also complete and return an application if they wish to be considered for opportunities for the academic year 2024/2025. Attendance at the training day is voluntary.
Application
If you wish to be considered for the provision of teaching and assessment support for 2024-25, you should first consult the University Policy and Guidance on Teaching and Teaching Support (Word, 365KB). Please note the restrictions in the policy around teaching if you are currently or entering into writing up of PhD (1.2.5).

The closing date for receipt of applications and CVs is 4pm on Monday 10th June 2024.
Selection
As part of our professional obligation to current doctoral candidates, Queen’s PhD students will be given first preference. Preference will then be given to returning Teaching Assistants who are current PGR students and returning Alumni. In determining suitability, the School will take into consideration, where appropriate, fulfilment of contract in the previous academic year and student module evaluations.
For shortlisting purposes, it is essential that applicants have:
- A minimum of a 2.2 Honours degree* in a relevant discipline.
- A PhD* (or be in the process of completing a PhD) in a relevant discipline or relevant industrial/professional/teaching experience
- A demonstrable interest in and commitment to teaching
*or equivalent qualification acceptable to the University.
It is expected that successful applicants will have excellent oral and written communication skills, and presentation skills.
Applicants currently in the first year of their PhD must pass differentiation before teaching commences in September 2024. Applications from all PhD students must have the support of their supervisor and input will be sought as appropriate.
Notification of Results and Engagement
Applicants will be notified of the result of their application accordingly. This will be done as soon as is practicable following the shortlist and selection stage. We will inform you as early as possible about the teaching that is likely to be available and the specific modules on offer.
Those who are not selected for teaching assistance in 2024-25 will have their application forms retained should future opportunities arise during the academic year.

Closing date is 4pm on Friday 31st May 2024.
We are seeking applications from qualified and experienced teachers who can contribute to the delivery of teaching, assessment and/or supervision of students on school placements to support the provision in our core modules:
- Education and Professional Studies
- School Placement
- English
- IT/Computing
- Mathematics
- Modern Languages (French/Irish/Spanish )
- Religious Education
- Social Sciences (Health and Social Care/Politics/Sociology)
- Science (Biology/Chemistry/Physics)
We are particularly interested in applicants who have recent experience of teaching Irish and/or Spanish to A-level.
Allocation of duties will be agreed in writing between the School and the individual, and will be determined by the teaching and supervision needs in 2024-2025. Mandatory Training for all new Tutors will be provided.

Selection
All applicants will be added to the register. Where a vacancy arises during the 2024/25 academic year, suitable candidates will be identified from the register and shortlisted. For shortlisting purposes, it is essential that applicants have:
- An undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline.
- A PGCE or equivalent teaching qualification acceptable to the University
- At least 5 years’ experience of teaching in a post-primary school
- Ability to work as a part of a team
- Effective communication and strong interpersonal skills
- Competence in working in online environment
It is desirable that applicants have:
- A Postgraduate degree
- Experience of teaching to A-level
- Experience in a promoted post (curriculum or pastoral) carrying at least two Teaching Allowances
- Experience of tutoring or lecturing at university level or equivalent
- Experience of leading teacher professional development
The University reserves the right to enhance the above criteria to facilitate a manageable shortlist.
